Maryam is from Bahrain. Her father and sister are in prison. She has been imprisoned, beaten and intimidated, but everything she has experienced as the leading face of Bahrain's pro-democracy movement has only left her more determined.
Now in exile in Denmark, she is the vice president for the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights and a selfless activist who stands up to injustice from North Africa to Syria and Iraq, and calls out Western government on their close alliances with Gulf States where democracy is violently suppressed.
