'As Black people, history has taught us that there is not only strength but also empowerment in self-organisation'
Malia is the NUS' Black Students' Officer. She has spent more than three years on the NUS Black Students’ Campaign committee, while studying for an MPhil in Postcolonial Theory and Language at the University of Birmingham.
She is committed to transforming the role into one that affects real change to the lives of students and communities; that robustly confronts racism in all forms and at all levels of society – from the far-right mobilising and Islamophobia, to the mainstreaming of anti-migrant xenophobia and institutional racism within education; connecting students in solidarity with the struggles of Black people worldwide.
